This site uses a proprietary metric called win score.
Win score is a metric that assigns a score to a win based on the following metrics:
Metric | Description |
---|---|
Location | Wins on the road are weighted a little bit higher than wins at home. |
Margin of Victory | The greater the margin of victory, the higher the win score. Margin of victory is capped to prevent rewarding teams for running up the score. |
Opponent Strength | This metric gauges the strength of the opponent based on the opponent's record during the past four years, with greater emphasis placed on the current year, and less emphasis placed on the trailing three years. |
Conference Strength | This metric gauges the strength of the opponent's conference based on out-of-conference games. |
Win score is purely mathematical and does not take into account head-to-head or any human biases, such as ranking in the AP Poll, Coaches' Poll, or CFP Poll.
Win score is also not a metric that determines which team is better.
The purpose of the metric is to determine the quality of the wins (and losses) for the season.
For example, Team A and Team B have the same record. Team A beat Team B, but Team B could still have a higher win score based on other games during the season.
Losses result in a negative win score and are also relative to the metrics above.
